I made the long trip out to El Paso for the big game in the Sun Bowl. It might not have been a big game in the college football world, but it was huge out in the West Texas town of El Paso. I didn't fall in love with a Mexican girl while I was out there, just in case you're wondering. The problem with away games, at least for me anyway, is that single women usually don't travel to them. They may go with their husbands or boyfriends. The real problem I have is the old people who don't cheer or yell. I'm not talking trash talking or anything, just cheering for your team. I felt compelled to sit and be quiet the whole game. I usually don't sit in the Longhorn section when I go to away games, and now I remember why. Oh well, I still had a good time. El Paso was very welcoming and it was nice to be back in the Sun Bowl. I think it's one of the better stadiums in the country. How many stadiums are built into the side of mountains? Some of the fans who couldn't get tickets (it was a record-setting sellout) climbed the tops of the rocky hills and watched. The picture was taken with about 25 minutes to go before the opening kick off. The Miners were obviously pumped up for the game. I have to admit, I was a little worried for a while. The Miners were up 6 to nothing and the Longhorns kind of looked sick. The offense got rolling eventually and the defense made just enough plays for the win. The defense has problems, though. The well-documented lack of experience in the secondary wasn't too bad of a problem. They are still having trouble playing zone with when the linebacker and safety are supposed to switch on a receiver. The biggest problem was the line on running plays. UTEP seemed to have 2nd and short the whole game. They got big yardage on first down running up the middle with delays and counters. The linebackers didn't plug the wholes quick enough. I'm worried that a better team, say Oklahoma, will run all over the defense and use play-action to score too many touchdowns. There's lots of room for improvement, but the talent and coaching is there to make the needed improvement.
Speaking of improvement, Idaho has decided to take their logo off their ass. The block "I" on the butt of their pants was kind of embarrassing for the players, I guess. I hear Arkansas, who's coming into Austin on Saturday, has a razorback tusk on the butt of their pants. I could understand putting your rival's logo on your ass, but why would you degrade yourself like that? Is this a Nike thing or something?

I hate that Texas doesn't get a bye week before the Colorado game.
